SELF-HELP

In the meantime the key has to be self-help, firstly by using ANTONIUM™ UTI/Cystitis Cream™ to relieve the pain, then various preventative measures can be taken. This is particularly so with bacterial cystitis, when particular attention should be given to hygiene and to ensuring that a stringent washing technique is carried out on a daily basis especially if you suffer frequent bouts of cystitis. (But do not forget that, if your symptoms persist, you should take professional medical advice).

  • Drink more fluids on a regular basis. Preferably at least 1.5 litres daily. Avoid coffee and alcoholic drinks which can exacerbate the symptoms.
  • After intercourse, going to the toilet to wash out any bacteria is probably a good idea in women with recurrent cystitis. Always wipe yourself from front to back to avoid transferring bacteria from the bowel to the urethra.
  • Lowering the acidity of the urine by taking a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking powder) in water every six hours is a good idea if you keep getting attacks.

In addition, there are many proprietary powder drinks on the market which are low sodium treatments containing potassium citrate which helps to neutralise the acidity in the urine. However, these take hours to work their way through the system and do not instantly relieve the acute pain. Until now, there has been very little that could be done to give immediate pain relief - that is until ANTONIUM™ UTI/Cystitis Cream™ became available.

A staggering 50 per cent of women will have at least one attack of cystitis during their lifetime and many women suffer repeated episodes. Cystitis is usually thought of as a young woman's problem and it may be jokingly referred to as "the honeymoon infection", but the risk actually climbs again during pregnancy, the menopause and old age, which all increase the risk of urinary infections. Although not so common men (and cats and dogs!) also suffer from cystitis.
